The current accomodation crisis will see many intending and existing third level students struggling to find accommodation to rent when the new academic year commences at TUS:Midlands Midwest Athlone campus.
With this particular issue firmly in mind, a prioritised campaign is being mounted by TUS Athlone in an effort to resolve some of the expected difficulties when it comes to students trying to obtain accommodation this year.
Many Ukraine refugees are being housed in properties which would have previously been utilised as student accommodation and with this situation unlikely to resolve for a number of months, the prospect of commuting on a daily basis or relying upon the accommodation assistance of friends may be the scenario which awaits many in September.
Josephine Feehily, Chair of the Board of Governors at TUS, stated this week that the issue is so vast that the third level institution is establishing a special administration unit this year to assist the Students Union as they address the problematic accommodation situation.
“We would be very keen to encourage members of the Athlone community who wish to support their local university, and who would also like to receive additional income, which is largely tax free, unless they earn more than €14,000 in a year, in the winter where maybe they may be tightening their belts, to encourage them to get in touch with our Athlone campus.
“We are establishing a special and particular marketing campaign, which we have not had to do in previous years, while also putting in place an administration unit to support the students union because it’s an extremely vast challenge for them now,” Ms Feehily asserted.
