Sun shines on Lady Captain’s weekend at Athlone Golf Club

Athlone Golf Club Lady Captain, Frances McGettigan, had a glorious weekend for her Captain’s Prize occasion.

There was a great entry to show appreciation to Frances for the marvellous work she is doing in this, her year of office. Always approachable, with a warm smile, Frances carries out much work that goes unnoticed by the members with many tributes paid to her at the presentation of prizes last Sunday evening.

Frances, in reply, thanked everyone for their good wishes and is wished well for the remainder of the season.

Festival of Golf

With the hay saved and the turf home, for this year anyway, thoughts in these areas usually turn to the Galway Races in Ballybrit. Here in Hodson Bay, Kiltoom and the wider region of Athlone and South Roscommon, the Festival of Golf for gents and ladies starts on Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24 with an open singles competition sponsored by Gateway Insurance.

Monday, July 25 is an open ladies day, sponsored by Clodagh’s Boutique. Temple Printing Co. are sponsoring on Tuesday and Wednesday next while on Thursday, July 28, there will be an open fourball sponsored by Leisureworld. Pro Golf Athlone sponsors on the Friday while Dubarry Shoes sponsor the Bank Holiday weekend on Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31.

On the Bank Holiday Monday, the Festival of Golf concludes with a grand scramble hosted by Athlone Golf Club. All in all. a great week of golf which we hope all golfing aficionados will enjoy. Booking for all these competitions can be made online or by ringing the Pro Shop at 090-6492073 with an entry fee of €25 for visitors.

Inter Club Competitions

Unfortunately, the club’s ladies intermediate team lost to Loughrea last Thursday evening in the Connacht quarter final by the tightest of margins, with Yvonne Walsh called in on the 19th green. Well done to all on a fine run. Hopefully, this augurs well for next year and a big thank you to team managers, Anna Walsh and Imelda Sheeran for all their hard work.

The ladies played in the Connacht Finals of the Australian Spoons in recent times and were represented by Maeve Holmes and Aletta Keena. The gross representatives were Ann Geoghegan and Yvonne Walsh.

Club Lotto

The Lotto jackpot of €2,800 was not won so next week’s jackpot will be €3,000 with a Match 3 prize of €200. The numbers drawn were 3,16, 23, 31.
