Civic reception mooted for Athlone Sub-Aqua Club to mark milestone foundation anniversary

To mark their volunteer contribution to the local community, local Fine Gael councillor, John Dolan, has requested that a civic reception be hosted to recognise the 50th anniversary of Athlone Sub-Aqua Club.

Speaking at the monthly meeting of Athlone-Moate Municipal District, Cllr Dolan noted that a county civic reception to honour the dedicated service provided to Athlone by the Sub-Aqua Club was wholly deserved.

“If any volunteer organisation deserves such an accolade, it is the Athlone Sub-Aqua Club. Since its establishment 50 years ago, the organisation has provided an essential water safety and search and recovery service to the town and is due such recognition to mark this milestone anniversary.

“One particular member, Derry McMahon, is with the Sub-Aqua club since its foundation and has to be commended for his saervice to the organisation. I believe that there are between 80 and 100 members in the club at present with a further 50 juniors in training.

“The organisation has a welcoming facility at the Jolly Mariner and thanks to the ongoing support from the local community remains in a position to provide such dedicated service to Athlone.

“It is my hope that we would award Athlone Sub-Aqua Club the county civic reception which it truly merits,” Cllr Dolan stated.

Concurring with the thoughts of Cllr Dolan, Cllr Aengus O’Rourke, noted that the Sub-Aqua Club was one of Athlone’s must successful volunteer organisations and supported Cllr Dolan’s motion to host a civic reception to mark the 50th anniversary of the organisation’s founding.
