Moate greenway to shine as Mayor’s street lighting initiative receives approval

During the June sitting of the Athlone/Moate Municipal District, recently elected Mayor, Cllr Vinny McCormack, received confirmation that the Council will progress with plans to provide street lighting on a section of the greenway along the old rail trail in Moate.

In response to a question tabled by Cllr McCormack the District Engineer stated that “the NTA have agreed to proposals for the provision of public lighting on the greenway between the Mount Temple Road Station Road under the Active Travel Programme.”

“The advancement of this project by the District is very welcome news and will be of great benefit to the hundreds of people in Moate who use the greenway on a regular basis. Since my election as a councillor for the area this has been one of my key objectives for the town and I am very pleased that the District Engineer has agreed with the merit of such a project and advanced it to the NTA for funding,” Cllr McCormack stated.

The response to Cllr McCormack also noted that “the project is subject to improved connectivity to the greenway along the Station Road and that design options are currently being prepared for this with a view to works commencing in quarter three of this year.”

“I look forward to the completion of this project which will mean that we can reap the benefits of the greenway in Moate right throughout the year and especially in the long winter evenings. We are very lucky to have this infrastructure on our doorstep and this project will greatly enhance how we use it,” Cllr McCormack concluded.
