Luan Gallery to host series of free workshops to mark celebration of Cruinniu na nÓg event

Luan Gallery will join in the national celebration of Cruinniú na nÓg by hosting a series of free workshops for children and teenagers, supported by Creative Ireland and Westmeath County Council, on Saturday, June 11.

The series of events will start at 11am with a collage workshop for ten to thirteen year olds (two hours in duration with 12 attendees permitted ) facilitated by Meath based visual artist, David Newton and Longford artist, Gary Robinson. The workshop will take place in Abbey Road Studios community space (first floor ) and will give children an introduction to collage as a form that allows for invention and discovery. The artists will give practical examples of how they use collage as starting points in their own studio art practices and guide the children on how to work on producing collages exploring personal ideas and art themes that will emerge from the rich collage materials offered on the day. The pieces created will be displayed in Luan Gallery on Sunday, June 12, and a short video of their displayed artwork will be published online on Luan Gallery’s social channels. Pre-booking is essential via Luan Gallery on 0906442154 or [email protected] as spaces are limited.

There are two further creative art workshops scheduled in the afternoon. The first, ‘Link me In’ is an outdoor workshop for children facilitated by Abbey Road Studios resident artist, Mimi Seery about how we are linked to each other and every living thing on the planet. The location of the workshop is the Civic Square green area (beside the public library building ) where ‘I See You’, an outdoor installation in celebration of Earth Day is currently being shown. The workshop is for children of aged six to 12 years (a maximum of 12 attendees ) and will take place from 1pm until 3pm.

Mimi will talk to the children about the installation and why it was created to celebrate Earth Day and its purpose to encourage connection with ourselves, with each other and with nature by linking all these elements as part of a whole when peering inside the human shaped mirror. She will encourage the children to consider what other things or beings we are linked to. Using paper craft to create a visual representation of the talk, the children will be given slips of paper to make a paper chain. On each link the children will be encouraged to write down each thing that they are connected to in their own lives. Mimi and the children will then surround the installation itself with the paper chain. How long it becomes and how large an area it covers is up to the length of the children's imagination. Pre-booking is essential via Luan Gallery on 0906442154 or [email protected] as spaces are limited.

At 2pm, artists David Newton and Gary Robinson, will host a second collage workshop in Abbey Road Studios community space (first floor ) for young people aged 14-17 years (2 hours in duration with 12 attendees permitted ). This workshop will offer young people the opportunity to explore materials and the creative processes that established artists use in their studios. A short explanatory video will introduce the young people to David’s practice in the hope of inspiring them and setting the scene for the workshop. All participants will leave the workshop session with a sketchbook and collage-making materials and their artistic collages will be displayed in Luan Gallery on Sunday 12th June. A short video of the displayed artwork will also be published online on Luan Gallery’s social channels.
