This weekend will realise the conclusion of the round robin phase of the All County Football Leagues in Westmeath, the top two clubs in each division advancing to a final fixture prior to the start of championship season in July.
The completion of a nine game league competition group phase has allowed respective managements to gauge the progress being made within their playing squads as minds turn towards the start of the championship and the quest for blue riband silverware in autumn.
South Westmeath clubs have experienced fluctuating form in their respective league divisions. In Division One, both Garrycastle and Castledaly are assured of their status for next year having accumulated eight points from their eight fixtures played to date. Garrycastle host Castledaly on Friday night (May 27 ), with a 7.30pm throw in.
Rosemount host St Loman’s in Fr O’Growney Park on Friday evening, knowing a defeat will result in their relegation to Division Two on the ‘head to head’ basis.
Rosemount have achieved three wins from their eight games played to date. The loss to Tang by the minimum being in a seven point half time ascendancy may prove detrimental to their league cause, but a united showing backed by a vociferous support may result in the ‘black and amber’ maintaining their Division One position.
Form teams, The Downs and Coralstown-KInnegad have secured their place in the final fixture, both clubs tasting defeat on just once occasion during their respective campaigns.
Meanwhile, in Division Two, Moate All Whites have stormed to a league final with seven victories from their eight games played to date. They host Ballymore in their final game this weekend with Tyrrellpass looking favourites to provide their final opposition. Tyrrellspass play relegation threatened Maryland knowing a win will secure a final berth.
Following an inauspicious start to their league campaign, resulting in the departure of former manager, Liam McHale, Athlone journey to Multyfarnham on Friday, throw in, 7.30pm, knowing a win would cement their place in the division for 2023.
Under the guidance of Eoin Jordan and Fergal Murray, Athlone have secured three wins and one draw from their eight games to date and will seek to add to their pre-championship momentum with a victory over relegation threatened Multyfarnham.
Caulry complete their league campaign with a home game with MIlltownpass and are assured of their place in the division prior to throw in, while Tubberclair know they need to win their final fixture at home to St Mary’s Rochfortbridge to stave off the threat of relegation.
All Division One and Two games will throw in at 7.30pm on Friday night.
