Westmeath County Council has confirmed that it intends to proceed with the use of CCTV imagery for the purpose of detecting and preventing illegal dumping once legislation is formally enacted.
Addressing the elected representatives at the most recent of Athlone-Moate Municipal District, District Manager, Jackie Finney, stated that the local authority is awaiting formal confirmation of relevant legislation and when this has been confirmed the council will commence the process of detecting and preventing illegal dumping courtesy of CCTV camera usage.
“We are eager to proceed in this regard once legislation has been formally written into law and as a local authority, we have identified a service provider with this aim in mind,” Ms Finney asserted.
The issue was raised by Fine Gael Councillor, John Dolan, the council executive’s formal response noting that the provision for the use of CCTV by local authorities for the purposes of detecting and preventing unsightly and illegal dumping and littering is included in the Circular Economy, Waste Management (Amendment ) and Minerals Development (Amendment ) Bill 2022.
‘This Bill was recently approved by Cabinet and published and has been passed to the Select Committee on Environment and Climate Action.
‘Once the Bill has passed through all stages of the legislative process and is signed into law local authorities will have a legal basis for the use of CCTV for the purpose of detecting and preventing unsightly and illegal dumping and littering,” the council executive confirmed.
