So the Oscars were held recently and all everyone was talking about was The Slap, which was great TV but I felt for the winners on the night who were overshadowed by the drama.
In previous years most of these movies wouldn’t be available to see at home for months but with the streaming revolution and covid rushing all these films to be available at home as soon possible you can see virtually everything from you couch.
I’m going to use this column to show you where you can see the winners, and then the where you can see the film or performance that I feel should have won. Best Picture was CODA, one I didn’t actually love but you can see it on Appletv+ and in the Palas cinema. It is a fine movie but for me, perhaps a little underwhelming.
My favourites of the best picture nominees were Nightmare Alley which is on Disney+ or Licorice Pizza which is NOWtv.In a rare case of the winner actually deserving the award Jane Campion won for Power Of The Dog which is on Netflix, it takes awhile to get going but has an absolutely sensational last quarter.
My personal choice however, would have been Denis Villenuve for Dune, currently only able to buy or rent on iTunes.The acting awards were all terrible choices by the academy in my opinion, it felt like they were awarding the MOST acting rather than who did the best acting.
Will Smith’s King Richard used to be on Disney+ but seems to have been taken off recently. You can rent it on iTunes if you’d like but I wouldn’t bother.
Best Actress went to Jessica Chastain for the Eyes Of Tammy Faye, again a bizarre choice. The film is on Disney+. The Supporting acting awards went to Ariana DeBouse for West Side Story, which I did actually quite like, thats on Disney+ as well, supporting actor went to Tony Kotsur for CODA.
My acting picks wold have been Benedict Cumberbatch for Power Of The Dog, he puts a really interesting performance for a tough role. For actress I would have gone for Penelope Cruz for Parallel Mothers, she seems to be better when she works in Spanish and is just incredible in this Pedro Almodovar classic.
Supporting I would have like to see two Irish actors win, both very deserving Ciaran Hinds for Belfast and Jessie Buckley in The Lost Daughter. Belfast is available to rent online and The Lost Daughter is on Netflix.
