The start of a new League of Ireland campaign now imminent, Athlone Town will strive for pastures positive, as new manager Martin Russell, aims to build early season confidence and momentum, achieving a play-off berth within the club’s belief this season.
Having secured the signatures of nine new players, Russell is in the throes of gelling his first team squad, the visit of Waterford United to Lissywollen on Friday night, a true test for Athlone Town, who finished a mere four points outside the play-off positions last campaign.
The Munster side are early season favourites for a swift return to the Premier Division, but Russell is hopeful that his charges can start the season with a competitive win.
“We have introduced nine new players to the squad as we build for the season to come. Our players are still gelling on and off the field but they will be eager to give of their best for the club when the competitive action starts on Friday night.
“Assembling a squad in the off-season can have its issues but now that we have made the necessary signings, the players can concentrate on their football and the season ahead,” Russell stated.
Acknowledging that all teams within the division have strengthened their playing squads, Russell noted that the aim is to have a progressive season with a play-off berth within the club’s capabilities.
“Of course we have ambitions as a football club. Obviously, we want to progress and we will have no excuses for not doing so. We want to play a brand of football which is attractive to our supporters and achieve positive results in the process,” Russell added.
Russell has been impressed with the stadium facilities which will be enhanced further and has called upon supporters of the club to come out in large numbers and fill the Lissywollen seats, an opening home fixture the perfect opportunity to set the tone.
“Waterford United supporters will travel in large numbers to Lissywollen, of that I am certain, so our players need the support of a vocal home voice from the stand,” Russell remarked.
While nine new players have been added to the first team squad, Russell notes that there may be an opportunity make additional signings should the need arise.
“Squad and budget wise we are very close to our limit, but should a player become available that can be of benefit the club then we will assess the situation if and when such a scenario arises,” Russell concluded.
Kick off at the Athlone Town Stadium in Lissywollen is 7.45pm on Friday night.
