Westmeath County Council community monuments fund now open for applications

Westmeath County Council, in conjunction with the National Monuments Service, Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage are inviting applications for the Community Monuments Fund 2022.

“The grant scheme offers funding for the conservation, maintenance, protection and presentation of archaeological monuments,” Heritage Officer Melanie McQuade stated.

The 2022 Community Monuments Fund will invest a total of €5 million in our archaeological heritage to help the owners and custodians of archaeological monuments to safeguard them into the future for the benefit of communities and the public.

The Community Monuments Fund has three streams - stream one for essential repairs and capital works for the conservation and repair of archaeological monuments; stream two offers funding for the development of conservation plans aimed at identifying measures for the conservation of archaeological monuments and improving public access, while stream three offers funding for enhancement of access infrastructure and interpretation (including virtual/online ) of archaeological monuments.

“In order to qualify for funding a monument must be included on the Record of Monuments and Places – this record can be checked on line at: https://maps.archaeology.ie/HistoricEnvironment/,” Melanie added.
