Athlone Deputy Mayor, Cllr Aengus O’Rourke, has welcomed a lighting display planned for the white bridge this weekend to mark World Remembrance Day for road traffic victims.
“World Remembrance Day for road traffic victims is commemorated on the third Sunday of November each year. Sadly, we all know a loved one, a friend, a neighbour or local family who have suffered the tragedy of losing someone in a road traffic accident. So, it is only fitting that we take a moment on this Sunday, November 21, to say a prayer or pause for reflection thinking of those who have passed away as a result of a road accident.
“In order to raise awareness for this important commemoration and road safety initiative, I have liaised with CIE on a new lighting display for the white bridge in Athlone to mark the event.
“The lighting display planned for this weekend will be like no other. The bridge will be lit in a very impressive multi colour of shades, the likes of which has not been seen on this structure previously. This display will be very colourful and impactful, and will serve as a powerful reminder to people - firstly, to remember those lost on our roads and secondly, to be careful while using our public roads.
Local authorities throughout the country are also suggesting that we light a candle from 7pm to 8pm on Sunday night as part of the campaign to raise awareness for road safety.
“I would like to sincerely thank Irish Rail in Athlone for agreeing with my proposal to participate in this initiative, illuminating the white bridge in the heart of our town and for agreeing to support this very worthy road safety campaign and commemorative event,” Cllr O’Rourke stated.
