Athlone and a number of surrounding areas saw a second night of water restrictions overnight due to a mechanical issue at the water treatment plant.
Irish Water, working in partnership with Westmeath County Council, said in a statement yesterday that the measure was necessary to protect water levels in the local reservoir and ensure customers have enough water to supply their homes and businesses during the daytime.
"Dedicated crews are working to complete the repairs as quickly and as efficiently as possible to safeguard the water supply to customers," it added.
The restriction, when ended at 6am today, affected homes and businesses in Athlone town, Baylin, Mount Temple, The Ories, Garrycastle, Dublin Road, Ardnaglug, Fardrum, Moydrum, Blyry, Killyon Hill, Bonavalley, and surrounding areas. Some customers may also experience temporary, intermittent, low pressure today while the repair works continue. Typically it takes two to three hours following essential works for normal supply to restore to all customers.
Irish Water is asking customers to continue to be mindful of how they use water and conserve where possible. While handwashing remains a priority, simple water conservation efforts can have a big impact on reducing demand on the supply. Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth and shaving can save up to six litres of water per minute, while taking a shower instead of a bath can also make a big difference in water savings.

"This restriction is necessary to safeguard daytime water supply for all homes and business in Athlone and surrounding areas," John Gavin, regional operations lead with Irish Water, said yesterday. "Repairs are progressing and are being conducted as quickly and as efficiently as possible at the water treatment plant. Irish Water understands the inconvenience night-time restrictions can have on customers and it appreciates customers’ patience as we work to complete the repairs and restore normal water supply to all customers.”
