Roscommon Sinn Féin to host commemorative ceremony

Roscommon Sinn Féin will hold a commemorative event this Sunday, September 26, from 1pm at the cemetery in Portrunny, Knockcroghery to mark 100 years since the death of IRA Volunteer Luke Killian.

Killian, from the townland of Cruit, Portrunny, was an active member of the Knockcroghery IRA Company from its inception in the summer of 1917. He died on September 23 1921 at the infirmary in Roscommon having sustained injuries while travelling from the funeral of fellow Republican John Scally at Cloontuskert some months earlier. He was aged just 35 years at the time of his death.

The commemoration will be chaired by Roscommon/Galway TD Claire Kerrane and Guest Speaker will be MEP for the region Chris Mac Manus MEP. Wreaths will be laid in memory of Luke Killian and the Roscommon Republican Roll of Honour as well as the 1916 Proclamation will be read at the event.

All are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be available afterwards for attendees at Mai’s Kitchen, Knockcroghery.
