Local Fine Gael Senator formally welcomes wholly positive impact of Adult Literacy for Life campaign

Local Fine Gael Senator, Aisling Dolan, has welcomed the recent launch of the Adult Literacy for Life campaign.

“I’m delighted to see the launch of this new campaign for people who struggle in silence to read, write, understand maths or how to access online services.

“Not being able to read or write properly has such an impact on people’s lives and health with many individuals struggling to read medications doses, fill in application forms online, understand safety in a workplace or manage household budgets and savings.

“Over half of adults in Ireland have challenges and perhaps do their best to cover it up and this is even harder when so much of our world has gone online over the past year.

“We now see most services are going online as well as shopping and banking. Eighteen percent of adults in Ireland have unmet literacy needs, goes up to 25 percent for numeracy and 42 percent of adults don’t have digital skills according to Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC ) study. We have to change these statistics.

“It is difficult to navigate this digital world, many of our older generations may have only had the chance and resources to study to Junior Cert level.

“Many individuals feel there is a stigma in our society which prevents them from maybe taking the first step and finding out what supports are there to help.

“Being able to fully participate in society – that’s the goal. We need a more inclusive and fair Ireland where no-one is left behind and that we all have the same access to making the best choices,” Senator Dolan stated.

The Fine Gael Senator for Roscommon-Galway stated that SOLAS, the national training agency, will primarily deliver the Adult Literacy for Life campaign.

“Our national training agency, SOLAS, are leading the way to deliver this plan working with our local Galway-Roscommon Education Training Board (GRETB ).

“They will look to increase the number of courses available within the vicinity, be it maths, reading, English language support and all at different levels to meet your needs. Study with tutors and with other adult learners all at the same level. It can be part-time to suit your home life and work or other commitments.

“Why not talk about this campaign and free supports with family or friends if you know someone who struggles to do daily tasks. This is a first step to building confidence and self-esteem and will make the world of difference to loved ones who struggle in silence.

“Give that person a boost and help them take the first step. Find out more at www.adultliteracyforlife.ie or freephone 1800 20 20 65 with any relevant queries,” Senator Dolan asserted.
