The HSE has confirmed that the COVID-19 test centre which was operating within the grounds of Athlone IT is no longer operational due to a decrease in public demand.
Residents of Athlone who now need to be tested for COVID-19 will now be directed for an appointment in Mullingar.
The drive through testing centre located on the grounds of Athlone IT was established in April as pandemic numbers continued to escalate on a continual basis.
It is believed that the infrastructure will be removed from the site by the close of this week.
In a statement released to local media this week, the HSE stated that it had consolidated its number of testing centres based on the current demand with testing requests for persons residing in Westmeath and Longford now being carried out in Mullingar.
As of 1am on July 21 there were 676 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Westmeath, it being three days since the county’s last confirmed instance.
