It was a momentous occasion in the history of Athlone Boat Club in recent times as construction on the new clubhouse along the banks of the River Shannon commenced.
Members, past and present, gathered in unison to recall old memories prior to construction commencing and relive former glories with future sporting aspirational thoughts also to the fore.
“While there is not much to celebrate in our ‘new normal’, the Athlone Boat Club can see a light at the end of the tunnel. One of the oldest sports clubs in Athlone, we have something to celebrate, as the present clubhouse is being knocked to the ground to make way for a new sleek building that will serve the future of the club. A new structure that will also grace the promenade and be able to accommodate members along with equipment and essentials.
“Paul Gallen, Eamon Fahy and Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran have worked tirelessly over the past few years to help make this a reality. With ‘Boxer’s’ support in securing significant funding along with funding from Leader, we are in a position to get our new build off the ground.
“Paul and Eamon, long time members of the club, have dedicated endless hours to this project, so for that, we thank and acknowledge all three for their generosity of time, support and spirit,” Athlone Boat Club PRO, Colette Scanlon Ortiz enthused.
