The Midlands Gateway Chamber announced this week that the principal after-dinner speaker at the Ambassadors Ball on May 8 is one of Ireland’s best know politicians, Charlie McCreevy.
The current European Commissioner for the internal market and services will be able to draw on his wealth of experience in public life in addressing the function. First elected to Dáil Éireann in 1977 as a Fianna Fáil TD, Mr McCreevy served as Minister for Social Welfare (1992 - 1993 ), Minister for Tourism and Trade (1993 - 1994 ) and Minister for Finance (1997 - 2004 ).
President of the Midlands Gateway Chamber, Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin, said, “This is a rare opportunity to hear from the person responsible for the EU’s policy on the functioning of Europe’s internal market of 480 million people. At a time when we are trying to revive economic growth and boost the country’s exports, this insight into the EU’s enormous internal market will be of value to all.”
He continued: “Furthermore, Charlie McCreevy’s experience of domestic politics through the turbulent 1980s, and in particular, his role in Cabinet from the early 1990s, ensures that this will be an insightful account of the past two decades in Irish political life.”
The Ambassadors Ball takes place on 8 May in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone. This major entertainment and networking event promotes and recognises the work of the Midlands’ finest ambassadors, both official and unofficial, working in partnership with the public and private sector. It is an excellent tool for business networking in convivial surroundings, whilst supporting the work of the Midlands Gateway Chamber.
Tickets are priced at €100 each or a table of 10 for €900.
