A request that the IDA purchase a land bank in the Moate electoral area to enahnce balanced regional development has been mooted by local Fine Gael Councillor, Tom Farrell.
Speaking at a recent monthly meeting of Athlone Moate Municipal District, Cllr. Farrell, stated that the town of Moate and its immediate environs should be afforded the opportunity to reach its maximum potential.
“With ease of access to the motorway, it is a necessity that there should be long term sustainable employment within the region,” Cllr. Farrell suggested.
Concurring with his political party colleague, Cllr. John Dolan, stated that at one time there was much industry in the Moate electoral area.
“If we are serious about creating a healthier lifestyle for our communities then it is essential that they dwell in close proximity to their place of work. As the Council were presently investing in a new streetscape for the town of Moate, Cllr. Dolan noted that the onus perhaps was upon the local authority to take initial steps with regard to the provision of suitable locations for the purpose of potential IDA purchase.
Supporting the principle of the motion, Town Mayor, Cllr. Frankie Keena, acknowledged that continuous growth withing the Municipal District and suggested an invitation be extended to the relevant IDA personnel to meet with the local authority in future times to discuss such potential industrial development in the region.
