A Mullingar man who pleaded guilty to possession of a kitchen knife has been refused bail and may see a suspended sentence activated.
Garda Michael Daniels told Mullingar District Court that Gardaí had received a call to the Lynn estate on April 2 this year at 1.15am where they were told that a person who was highly intoxicated was possibly carrying a knife.
The knife was an eight-inch blade from an electric carving knife.
The 19-year-old recently had the last five and a half months of an 11 month sentence suspended at Mullingar Circuit Court and in view of the current conviction, he will have to reappear before the Circuit Court.
The court heard that bail was being opposed because Gardaí had “serious concerns for his family”. Garda Daniels admitted that when Derek Fenton is not living at home at 36 Lynn Heights, “a lot of difficulties are alleviated”.
He said he was concerned that if admitted to bail, Mr Fenton would return to the family home, as he has done so before.
He will appear before Mullingar District Court on the offensive weapons charge on April 21 and before Mullingar Circuit Court on May 12.
