A case of mission accomplished for Willow Park senior team in their first season as an intermediate club with promotion from the Leinster Senior League Senior Division 1B Sunday now confirmed, as Hartstown Huntstown FC failed to make the trip to DPD Park on Sunday afternoon.
With two games remaining in the league campaign, the Declan Holohan and David McGuinness managed team have tasted defeat on only four occasions and are the most offensively potent team in the division netting on 69 occasions.
As the league reaches its conclusion and with two games to contest, the goal now is to annex the title, with St. John Bosco their rivals for the silverware.
Speaking this week, joint manager, David McGuinness, expressed his delight with the squad’s league achievements with promotion the premier goal when the campaign commenced in August,
“Obviously, it is great to be promoted with two games to spare. Last year, it went down to the last twenty minutes of the season at home to St. Francis who at the time themselves were pushing for promotion.
“Getting promoted in our first year in intermediate football is a huge achievement for the management and the squad. They have fully committed to the promotion cause and the players are always willing to listen and improve on their consistently good standard of play,” David remarked.
The joint manager noted the similarities between last and this season as the season edge towards its conclusion.
“Last season, we won our last seven games to secure promotion and we have done similarly again this season. We are now on the back of a seven game winning streak with two games remaining.
We return to Baldonnell again on Thursday week for our last away game of the season. St Francis themselves are still involved in a promotion battle with our neighbours Mullingar Athletic, Collinstown, and Kilbarrack so they are going to be well prepared for this game. This fixture has not been good to us in the last couple of seasons having conceded four goals on both occasions and tasting defeat,” David continued.
With a title to be won, David acknowledged that rivals St. John Bosco are in prime position to claim top spot in the division.
“A win brings it down to the last game of the season. We’ll just have to sustain the pressure on St. John Bosco and hope that a favour falls our way in the coming weeks,” David concluded.
