Woman abandons boxes of recycling goods

A woman has been prosecuted by Westmeath County Council for leaving refuse beside bottle banks in Rathwire.

CCTV images of Siobhán Neary showed her leaving the waste in a pile beside the recycling centre.

Judge Elizabeth McGrath heard that Ms Neary had been invited to the council to discuss the issue and could offer no reason why she had simply abandoned the bottles in boxes and made no attempt to approach the actual banks.

There was waste in the area which had been deposited by others and the maximum penalty for the offence is a fine of €3,000.

The case has been adjourned to June 26 to allow Ms Neary pay €350 costs to the council for the processing of the summons.

Judge McGrath said the offence was not on the scale of dumping at the side of a public road, but it was still a litter matter.

If the payment is made, the Probation Act will be applied.
