Local Independent Councillor, Michael O’Brien, has welcomed the news that detailed plans for an outdoor swimming pool in the river Shannon, will come before Athlone Municipal District for consideration in the coming months.
The Office of Public Works is currently working on detailed plans, following the news in December, of their €3m investment into the public realm along the strand, quays and along the canal in Athlone.
Cllr. O’Brien initially brought forward a council motion in June of last year, calling for the provision of a designated bathing area on the river Shannon.
“I initiated the motion because, sadly, during the summer season, we see tragedy in our rivers and lakes around the country as people get into difficulty while trying to swim, particularly during warm weather. Presently, we do not have a designated safe bathing area in the river Shannon or on Lough Ree.
“The €3m investment by the OPW into the public realm will include a swimming pool area within the river, located along the strand. I think it is vitally important that we fully utilise and promote the beautiful amenity that we have in the river. This will be a tremendous addition to the river and will enhance the safety for those who wish to swim in the amenity and will help enhance our tourism product.
“I am hopeful that detailed plans will come before Athlone Municipal District with works to progress in the near future,” Cllr. O’Brien concluded.
