Featuring the works of contemporary Westmeath artist, Eoin Butler, 'Now & Then, Here & There', the winter exhibition at the Luan Gallery continues until February 9.
A native of Mullingar, Butler is renowned for painting plein air landscapes, nudes and portraits, works that pay particular attention to their place in art history. Over the last number of years, the bogs in the midlands have provided rich source material and inspiration for his work. The exhibition will be opened and accompanied by written contributions by Ciarán Benson, Professor of Psychology, University College Dublin and a member of the International Association of Art Critics.
"Eoin Butler's sensitivity to the physicality of a spectator’s memory is the sensitivity of a true educator. But his commitment to imaging his own most intimate connections to tree, bog and sky, his ‘home’, is a gift to us all. ‘Then’ and ‘Now’ richly merge in this fine show."
The exhibition is a wonderful opportunity for the Athlone and Midlands audience to see the development of Eoin’s ongoing practice over a number of years, and to engage with work that explores subject matter of personal significance to them. The bogs are a defining feature of the midlands landscape, rich in heritage and deeply embedded in the cultural memory of the midlands people.
'Now & Then, Here & There' will runs until February 9, with Luan Gallery delighted to welcome schools and groups for talks and tours throughout the exhibition run. Guided tours are free of cost and available on request to all.
Luan Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday from 11.00–17.00 and Sundays from 12.00–17.00. The gallery is closed on Mondays.
