Bail for man involved in Mullingar riots

A man charged with violent disorder arising out of the Mullingar riot last July has been granted bail by the High Court.

Christy Nevin, 33 Abbeylands, Mullingar, was granted bail on Monday with conditions, including the payment of €10,000 cash.

At Mullingar District Court Ms Patricia Cronin, solicitor for the defendant, told Judge Elizabeth McGrath that Mullingar Credit Union would not advance her client the money required to discharge his bail because of a freezing order which she said was “frustrating his attempt” to comply with the High Court order.

She explained that when Mr Nevin had been arrested for public order offences which breached a number of his bail conditions, he had a credit union account in his possession showing a large sum held on deposit.

She told the judge that the freezing order had been made following comments made to Judge Neilan. She said her client had become frustrated and “uttered words” to the judge when he proposed bail in the sum of €100,000.

The judge then decided to freeze the account, she said.

When a copy of the High Court bail order was provided to the court, Judge Elizabeth McGrath made an order instructing Mullingar Credit Union to release €10,000 to allow Mr Nevin comply with it.
