Luan Gallery is delighted to present 'Elevate', an exhibition celebrating contemporary Irish art from the last decade, drawn from the Arts Council of Ireland Collection 2008-2018.
The exhibition opens today, Thursday, May 31, and continues until July 29.
The Arts Council collection was established in 1962 when the council first started acquiring work from living artists. This collaboration with the Arts Council presents a selection of print, paint, photography, drawing, video and sculptural works by 13 of Ireland’s most prominent artists from the past 10 years. Artists presented in the exhibition are Jenny Brady, Willie Doherty, Damien Flood, David Godbold, Katie Holten, Jesse Jones, Eithne Jordan, Clare Langan, Eoin McHugh, Julie Merriman, Richard Mosse, Sonia Shiel and Daphne Wright.
The exhibition presents a visual overview of contemporary arts practice from the past 10 years. Referencing ideas of knowledge, identity, iconography and ideology among others, the works presented in elevate will inspire an engaging and enriching experience with contemporary visual art. The exhibition will be officially launched on Thursday, May 31, at 6pm with an address by the director of the Arts Council of Ireland, Orlaith McBride. Westmeath arts officer, Miriam Mulrennan, will also speak.
Eamonn Maxwell, collection advisor to the arts council, said: "The artists in this exhibition have an impressive track record. Four have represented their country at the Venice Art Biennale. Three are members of Aosdána. Several have exhibited in major biennales such as Documenta, Lyon and Sao Paolo. They have won international prizes including Prix Pictet and been included in international film festivals including Kino der Kunst. All the artists have had substantial shows in Ireland, across Europe, the USA, Asia and Australia. Collectively they represent some of the most exciting Irish artists working today."
This is a wonderful opportunity to view the work of some of the most prominent artists from the past 10 years. Luan Gallery will host an ‘In Conversation’ event with collections adviser, Eamonn Maxwell, and a number of selected artists on Saturday, June 30, at 2pm. All are welcome.
The exhibition will continue until Sunday, July 29.
Luan Gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm, and on Sundays from 12 midday to 5pm. Admittance to Luan Gallery is free and guided tours are available to all at no cost.
