Roscommon Arts Centre has announced that award-winning novelist Kevin Barry’s Autumn Royal will close its national tour right in Roscommon on June 1 and 2.
Following last year’s sell out shows in The Everyman in Cork, Autumn Royal takes to the road this summer, stopping off at Roscommon Arts Centre for two performances, and this is one piece of theatre you do not want to miss!
Starring Siobhan McSweeney and Peter Campion, who recently starred in the hilarious Channel 4 hit show, Derry Girls, Siobhan as the hilarious Sister Michael and Peter as the ‘sexy priest’, Father Peter, Autumn Royal is the recent winner of BBC NI Best Radio Drama at the 2017 Stuart Parker Trust Awards.
Written by Kevin Barry, whose works include Beatlebone and City of Bohane, this is Barry’s first piece written originally for stage, and was acclaimed by critics and the public alike during its world premiere run at the Everyman in 2017.
May (Siobhan ) and Timothy (Peter Campion ) are looking after the father, who has long since taken to the bed. Their own lives are curtailed, closed down, and they are not getting any younger. Should they stay or should they go? This is a dark, dark comedy. Set on the northside of Cork city, Autumn Royal is a play about life and death, love and hate, hysterical dependency, jealousy, rage, horror, and homicidal notions. Or, in other words, it is a play about a family!
This is a brilliant play, full of wit and sentiment. Kevin Barry has long since established his reputation as a fiction writer, and his stage debut is every bit as good.
