There were only four points to separate the sides on the scoreboard at the end of the game in MacHale Park on Sunday afternoon, but in reality the gap on the field was much, much bigger as Galway never once look in trouble over the course of the contest. Mayo made numerous, elementary mistakes that they will be kicking themselves about over the coming days and know that if they had cut them out they could have been in with a real fighters chance going down the home straight.

Westport United kept up their 100 per cent record in the Elverys Sports Super League on Sunday, but they were made to work hard to maintain their winning run by Charlestown Athletic. Two late second half goals was what separated the teams at the full time whistle with David Cameron and David Hoban hit the target late on.

Ballinrobe 5k sees good turn out

Joan Walsh and her Ballinrobe Fit4Life team did a great job as usual in organising the third race in Mayo AC Summer 5k Series on another very hot Tuesday evening. The water stop at 2.5k was very welcome, as was the shade of the trees from 3k. There was a great turn out with 226 finishers of the event with a lot of the ‘big guns’ of Mayo racing out in force on the course. The course was fast and flat and despite the heat there were plenty of PBs and happy faces at the finish line. The top three male finishers were Conor Dolan (GCH) in 15:49, TJ McHugh in 17:28, and Noel Gibbons (Mayo AC) IN 17:29. Catherine Conway was the first woman over the line in 18:49, with Sarah Syron (Mayo AC) in second place in 19:24, and Pauline Moran (Mayo AC) in third place in 20:59. Elite field to compete for One Wall honours

More than 400 players are fine-tuning their preparations for this weekend’s GAA Handball One-Wall Nationals at Breaffy House, Castlebar. Three time champion Charlie Shanks returns as top seed in the EDTL Handball Men’s Open having missed the last few tournaments due to his hiatus in New York, while Robbie McCarthy returns after missing last year’s event. McCarthy will replace four time World 40x20 Champion Paul Brady in the men’s open draw after the Cavan man had to withdraw through injury. But McCarthy is a classy replacement and is on the verge of making history. A three time champion himself, Mullingar’s McCarthy will bid to be the first man to hold the All-Ireland Senior 40x20 Title, All-Ireland Senior 60x30 Title, and Irish Men’s Open One-Wall Nationals Title all at the same time, which would be a truly remarkable achievement.

Mayo took their chances to teach Galway a lesson

The Galway minor footballers paid the ultimate price for their profligacy in the first 20 minutes of the Connacht semi-final in Tuam Stadium on Saturday, crashing out of the championship by 3-7 to 1-12. This was a game Galway could have won - if they had been more ruthless and efficient in front of goal when they were in almost complete control. We counted at least three glorious goal chances Galway squandered when they were in great positions in that period. Michael Daly shot wide once when in a good position, while his clubmate Colm Mannion was called back for over-carrying when he should have laid the ball off to men who were free inside. Those two incidents stand out, but there was numerous other opportunities to raise a green flag or two.

Last weekend’s men’s competition was won by Stephen Walsh who shot 55 nett to hold off Eamon Donnellan in second place. The gross prize was won by Bert Eagleton with Aodan McSuibhnie finishing in third place. The ladies’ competition was won by Marian Gormley who scored 52 nett, Delia O’Hara finished in second place, with Mary B O’Donnell in third place, and Marie Flanagan winning the gross prize. Lady Captain Patricia Conwell will host her Captain’s Day competition this Sunday July 6.

Is it time for a two tier championship?

The World Cup has reached the quarter final stages, Wimbledon has almost reached its climax, yet the Provincial finals in the GAA championships have yet to yield their winners despite starting two months ago. When you think how fast these other tournaments are run off it makes you feel for the inter county players with the long drawn out season with gaps of up to six weeks between games. None of the big hitters has been eliminated in the football championship, and before you say what about Derry, they were never going to win the All-Ireland. One team I felt may be able to put it up to Dublin, physically anyway, was Monaghan. They are lucky to be still in the Ulster championship and they have no greater incentive to win their replay with Armagh than avoiding a replay against Tyrone in the qualifiers. Monaghan more than likely felt great about themselves after beating Tyrone, and clearly took their eye off the ball playing against Armagh, while probably looking ahead to an Ulster final repeat against Donegal without actually having qualified for it. They got the wake up call necessary and I am sure they will win the replay.

Westport just keep on winning

Outside the Box was off last week. But some things don’t change, and Westport United kept on winning, making it ten out of ten so far in the Elverys Sports Super League. I don’t know if any bookmakers are giving odds on the men from the Sportspark going through the whole season with a 100 per cent record, never mind unbeaten, but if they are they are surely shrinking with each week that goes by. This weekend they will make the trip to Charlestown Athletic to take on a side who have more than held their own with the rest of the league this season, and picked up their fourth win last time out with a 1-0 win over Fahy Rovers in Moneen. But when these sides met in round three of the league back at the tail end of April, Westport United ran out 7-2 winners with a side that was shorn of many of their biggest names.

Board working well with management team - Horan

Mayo manager James Horan said this week that his players and management have not wanted for anything from the county board during his tenure and they have a very good working relationship. Speaking this week he said, “I’ve been in this job four years and to be honest, the players and the management have not wanted for anything really from the county board. I know, no more than the managment team, they can get a lot flack and abuse. We’ve had our ups and downs for sure, but we’ve worked very, very well. Vincent Neary has come in and is exceptional and works very well with us. So overall, very happy with the relationship with the county board. Everyone has to be pointing the one way for a unit to be successful, but we’re getting there.”

Minors take advantage to book Connacht final spot

It was never going to be an easy assignment for Enda Gilvarry's new batch of Mayo minors, opening their championship account against a well fancied Galway side in the home of Galway football in Tuam Stadium. John Donnellan's side came into the game on the back of having already had a championship game under their belt against Sligo last weekend and a growing reputation.
