We looked like a division four team, again
Fri, Jun 11, 2010
It seems now that Mayo's dreadful display against Cork in the league final earlier this year was not a once off, but a fair reflection of where this team and management currently stands. In that final we played like a division four team. We looked every inch a division four team again last week. I realise that winning performances are not always associated with dazzling displays of individual or team brilliance. A winning performance is achieved by relentless work, harrying, hitting, running, tracking back, tackling, winning dirty balls. This is a basic requisite to be successful in championship football. That's what we wanted from our evening in Sligo. As a result of the defeat Mayo has also missed out on an attractive home tie against our old friends, Galway, in a few weeks’ time. It was planned to coincide with the official opening of the new stand, but that too must be shelved for the time being. This missed opportunity also means a very significant loss of revenue for the County Board and another hit to local businesses.

The recent Carramore 10k was race number one in the 2010 C & C Cellular Mayo AC League and it may be a long way to the final race in December but last year’s winners Gerry Ryan (Craughwell AC) and Catherine Conway Mayo AC) put down a strong marker for the season to come by taking the maximum 25 league points on offer. Ryan is closely followed by three times league winner John Byrne (Mayo AC) and the ever improving TJ McHugh in third place. In the women’s event twice winner and last year’s runner up Mary Gleeson lies in second place with 2003 winner Angela O’Connor in third. Back to the basics this weekend
Fri, Jun 11, 2010
While the post-mortem on Mayo’s inglorious exit from the Connacht championship went on over the week and will go into the future, it’s back to basics this weekend for the inter county football panel when they rejoin their club mates for the first round proper of action in the Royal Theatre senior and intermediate championships.
Section three of the senior championship, which has five teams in it, got under way a few weeks ago with Charlestown seeing off West Mayo and Westport coming home from Kiltaine with the points. This weekend Westport will host Breaffy on Sunday at 4pm in what could be one of the crucial ties of the group. Westport are on a high, having claimed the intermediate crown last year they have put in some good league performances to leave them not too far off the top sides. Going to Kiltaine was never going to be an easy ride for them, but they passed their first senior championship challenge thanks to a good showing.

Irrespective of the result in Markievich Park tomorrow evening, you will meet the happy chap who will have consoling words for the losers along the lines “it's not the end of the world”, “you always have the back door”, and “anyway where were we going this year?” These platitudes may all be wonderful to the guy who hasn’t prepared for a match of this magnitude, but try telling that to the players or management of the losing side and I can guarantee you it will sound very hollow!
