Ballyhaunis
Tony Cribben was the winner of the Knock members competition last weekend with a score of 62 nett, he just held off the challenge of John P Kelly in second place. Tom McGuire took third with a score of 64 nett while Diarmuid Finnegan won the gross prize with a score of 73 gross. In the ladies section, Kung Fanning was the winner with a score of 66 nett, one ahead of Nuala Fitzgerald in second place with Ann Greenway one further back in third place. The gross prize went to Marge Hierons with a score of 82 gross, while Conor Freeley won the junior section.
Claremorris
Last weekend the competition was a fund-raising Am Am which was won by the team of Pat Coyne, Fergal Hughes, Brendan Walsh, and Fergal Corbett with a score of 96 points. The team of Noel Greer, Frank Gibbons, Noel O’Connell, and Danny Dolan took second spot with 93 points. In third place was the team of Tom Griffith, Matt Griffith, Pat Howley, and John Donnellan
Green and Red
The Green and Red golfing society will have an outing in Claremorris Golf Club on Saturday June 26, it will be an 18 hole Stableford competition with lots of prizes on offer. Westport
Liam Friel was the big mover in the golfer of the year table following the Pat Bree competition played recently. Liam moved from 84th to 18th in the overall standings. Joe Kelly consolidated his first place position, extending his lead to 450pts. A reminder, the top 30 golfers at the end of the season will be invited to play for the coveted title.
One of the longest standing GOY competitions is also worthy of mention, as further proof, if proof were needed, of the current high standard of junior golf in the club. Joe Hastings, Jack Beirne, and Matthew Golden all featured in the prizes, with Hastings and Beirne getting podium finishes.
Des Mahon, tournament organiser, was delighted that more than 140 players from 21 clubs played in the Mayo Open Seniors sponsored by Hastings Insurance at Westport Golf Club. In perfect sunny weather the scoring, like the weather, was hot. The winner, John McDonagh from Castlebar, playing off a 16 handicap, had an astonishing 51 Stableford points to win by eight points from his nearest challenger Liam Walsh Westport/Mulranny.
Todd O’Reilly, the Canadian PGA professional, a member of the Alex Mealia team at Westport Golf Club, has announced details of coaching classes that will begin in early June. He hopes to offer something different to club golfers who wish to shave a number of shots of their weekly score. O’Reilly will also join Alex Mealia this summer in the ever popular Junior Golf Camps at Carrowholly. Dates and format are yet to be finalised but full details will be published as soon as possible.
