Hurlers make winning start

Fri, Jan 28, 2011

Murt Connolly and Mayo got off to a winning start to 2011 with a comfortable win over Galway and Connacht Intermediate club champions Pearses in Ballyheane on Saturday. An early point scoring blitz by Mayo gave the home team a 0-12 to 0-4 half time lead, as the higher athleticism shone through for the county side. Five first-half points apiece from Kenny Feeney (Tooreen) and Keith Higgins (Ballyhaunis) afforded both a half-time shower, as Murt Connolly took the opportunity to get to know his panel of players.

Attitude and desire key for Horan

Sun, Jan 23, 2011

With only one more game left before the start of the National Football League against Down, time is ticking away for James Horan before he has to pick his squad for the competition. After sending 15 different players into battle against Roscommon from the one that he selected for the season opener against GMIT a pleased Horan knows that he is going to have some tight calls to make. “At the end of January we've to pick a panel and there will be some guys who are borderline and some close calls and we'll be playing them so that will dictate how we go.” He went on to praise the commitment from the squad he has assembled at present and say that desire and commitment will be key parts of his selection process. “People are keen, there are going to be a lot of players who are of similar ability or a similar level and what it will come down to at the end of the day is attitude and desire and how much they want it”

On the game itself the man who led Ballintubber to their first ever senior county title last Autumn was pleased with the performance of his side especially in the second half. “Roscomnon started very well and they had us pinned back and we couldn't get to grips with their runners. I suppose the main reason for that was that we were getting dominated at midfield and we were getting hammered at the breaking ball. I don't think we got a breaking ball in maybe the first 15 or 20 minutes.

A win is the only result that will do for Mayo

Fri, Jan 21, 2011

The Mayo League Oscar Traynor side will go to McSharry Park in Sligo on Sunday afternoon knowing that only a win will do if they want to progress in the competition this season. A fortnight ago Brendan Kenny’s side played their first game in the competition at home to the Roscommon League and were only able to come away from the game with a draw. However Kenny was happy overall with the performance of his players. “It was a tough game and the lads hadn’t played for a long time,” he said. “We were going into the game soft, having only a few training sessions under our belts. We went behind three times and pulled it back each time which was a positive itself. You can’t doubt the commitment of the lads, you can have the best players in the world but if you don’t have the commitment you won’t win anything. Everyone of them showed pride in the jersey which is something you can’t buy.”

Horan to shake things up for Roscommon clash

Fri, Jan 21, 2011

The visit of Connacht champions Roscommon to Ballyhaunis on Sunday gives James Horan another chance to have a look at the cast of hopefuls who are vying to nail down a place in his plans for the coming year. Horan opened up his inter-county management account last Saturday night in McHale Park, with a win over GMIT in the first floodlit game in the county ground. A healthy crowd of some 2,000 turned up for the game which, while it failed to light up the night on the field, was a good dry run for those involved in getting the ground ready for the visit of Down in the National Football League on February 5. However Horan was happy enough with how things went on the night in the most part. “It was a poor enough game, we came through it OK apart from Kevin Dolan who was very unfortunate. He was operated on Tuesday and hopefully he won’t be out for too long. It was good to get out there and see the guys in action on the field, it’s where you’ll learn what you are about and see mistakes that are being made and where you need to work on your game.”
