Speaking to the Mayo Advertiser this week, Mr Horan said that the meeting on Monday night went well. “I feel that that meeting went very well on Monday night, I got to go in and sit down with the executive and go over the plan with them. What came out of it is that the steering committee who drew up the plan will all be invited to attended the next meeting of the county board where we will be able to answer any questions that the clubs or the executive may have. Bad weekend for Mayo sides

Mon, Mar 14, 2011

A weekend that promised a lot delivered very little for Mayo football followers, apart from more questions. On Saturday a very fancied u21 team went into battle against Roscommon in McHale Park in the preliminary round of the Connacht championship and were dumped out of the competition at the first hurdle. On paper Mayo had a team full of players who would have had designs on at least a Connacht title if not more. But when it came to the crunch, too many players did not show up and they were just passengers on they day when Roscommon won out by 0-11 to 0-9 in Castlebar.

Second Italian helping for Connacht

Fri, Mar 11, 2011

Eric Elwood is warning his Connacht side against complacency ahead of Friday's meeting with Aironi at the Galway Sportsground. Elwood says Connacht are in no position to take any team for granted and certainly not an Italian side that will be targeting Friday's game to achieve an elusive victory in this season's Magners League. Although Aironi have yet to post a win, Elwood says the Italians have shown considerable improvement.

A group of five present and past swimmers from Castlebar Swimming Club, Katie Tuohy (NUI Maynooth), James Caulfield (NUI Galway), Conal Joyce (Dublin IT), James Sweeney and Sarah Caulfield (UCD), took part in the Irish Swimming and Lifesaving Intervarsities in Kilkenny, each representing his/her respective colleges. The event, hosted by NUI Maynooth (NUIM), proved to be a great success with most of the universities and institutes of technology present. For the course of this event the Castlebar swimmers had to set aside their club loyalties, and in Sarah and James Caulfield’s case family loyalty and give it their all for their colleges. Friday evening saw the start of the competition with the swimming heats and what a start it proved to be. Competition was fierce with many national champions in attendance including Olympian Aisling Cooney (UCD). However, the Castlebar crew held their own and in some cases raced against each other in the same events to reach the finals session on Saturday morning.

Win or bust for u21s on Saturday

Fri, Mar 11, 2011

It is a simple as can be tomorrow (Saturday, March 12) when this year's crop of Mayo u21s take to the field in the preliminary round of the Connacht u21 championship. Win and they are through to a semi-final against Leitrim the following week, lose and it is pack away the Mayo gear for another year, or maybe forever for a number of the players. Standing in the way of Ray Dempsey's men and progression in the championship are the near neighbours in primrose and blue, Roscommon. Dempsey took charge of the Mayo u21s last year for the first time after three very successful years as the manager of the minor team which saw him reach two All Ireland finals on the trot. But last year the wheels came unstuck in a ill tempered semi-final in Hyde Park on St Patrick’s Day, which Mayo lost by a single score following a helter skelter affair.
