Can Castlebar stop the Ballintubber double?
Fri, Oct 21, 2011
All eyes will be on McHale Park on Sunday for the repeat of last year’s senior championship final, last year it was Ballintubber who were the last men left standing. While both groups of players are still more or less the same, on the sideline two new men will have been busy for the past few weeks plotting and planning each other’s downfall. When James Horan left Ballintubber to rejuvenate the standing of Mayo football on a national level, Anthony McGarry was the man left with the task of filling his boots. For the Mitchels, when Peter Ford stepped aside his banisteoir’s bib was handed to former Mayo senior and u21 manager Pat Holmes, and one target was given him, bring the Moclair cup back to the county town.

Sunday showdowns in junior cup
Fri, Oct 14, 2011
With the Mayo League season put to bed until next spring after the cup finals and play-off, attention turns to national and provincial glory over the winter months. The second round of the Umbro FAI Junior Cup will take centre stage this Sunday all across the county. The big game in this round is the meeting of the newly crowned Super League champions Castlebar Celtic and the cup winners Iorras Aontaithe. The league champions will make the long journey north on Sunday morning to Carnenash to take in what should be a real cup classic. Celtic finished 14 points in front of Iorras in the league standings at the end of the season, with Iorras languishing in mid-table. However the black and red striped side will have been boosted by their recent cup win and Carnenash is never an easy place for any side to go to. When the sides met in the league this year in the same venue Celtic won 2-1 and in the return leg, Celtic handed out a 7-1 hammering on the second last day of the season. Nevertheless, Sunday’s game should be a lot closer than their last league meeting.
Other action in the cup will see Ballina Town host near neighbours Moy Villa, while Claremorris, who pushed for the Super League title all the way in their first season back up, will host Ballyheane. Super League runners-up Westport United will take on a Snugboro United side who managed to stay up in the Premier A division on the last day of the season. Swinford, who were relegated from the Super League, will host a Manulla side who finished just one place in front of them in the league this season. All games are down for kick off at 2pm expect for the meeting of Claremorris and Ballyheane which is down for 2.30pm.

In recognition of the contribution of players to the success of soccer in the county, the Mayo League last week announced the introduction of a third-level sports scholarship scheme for the 2011/12 academic year. Five scholarships, valued at €1,000 each, will be awarded to players registered with the Mayo League. The scholarships will be of significant benefit to recipients in helping to fund their education costs.

Castlebar is a long way from the Friday Night Lights of Texas High School football which was the background to HG Bissinger’s seminal 1990 book of the same name. But Castlebar will play host to Mayo’s own underage showdowns under the glare of the floodlights this evening with both semi-finals in the Mayo u21A championship down for decision.

Ballina kept up their good start to the season with a comprehensive 45 point win over Galwegians in Heffernan Park last weekend. En route to the win they crossed the whitewash six times and grabbed themselves a bonus point victory. That win keeps Ballina in second place in the table, behind Monivea who are top by four points. Ballina will head to the league leaders this weekend as they look to close the gap at the top of the table. Ballina’s opponents saw off third placed OLBC last weekend to keep up their 100 per cent record.

NUI Galway will host the Sigerson football competition in February 2012. I, along with Tomas Tierney, have agreed to look after the team again this year and we intend to have a little more success than last year – a year in which we became frustrated at times for a combination of reasons. We made it to the quarter finals in UCD but came up well short against the hosts.
