Ballina kept up their good start to the season with a comprehensive 45 point win over Galwegians in Heffernan Park last weekend. En route to the win they crossed the whitewash six times and grabbed themselves a bonus point victory. That win keeps Ballina in second place in the table, behind Monivea who are top by four points. Ballina will head to the league leaders this weekend as they look to close the gap at the top of the table. Ballina’s opponents saw off third placed OLBC last weekend to keep up their 100 per cent record.
Of the other Mayo clubs in action in division 1A of the junior league there was not such good news last weekend, both Westport and Castlebar went down to Galway opposition. Westport lost out 18-3 to Tuam at home in Carrowholly, while Castlebar finally lost to Corinthians but finally managed to get a point on the league table after a late penalty secured them a losing bonus point. This weekend Castlebar will travel to Galwegians, the team just in front of them in the table, and after Ballina gave them a 45 point beating last weekend a first win of the season is a real possibility for Castlebar. Westport will look to get back on the winning track when they travel to Corinthians who were pushed by Castlebar in the second half last weekend, and a win is more than achievable for the Bulls on the road.
