Over 30 local volunteers, club members and Ulster Bank staff lined-out in Ballyhaunis Rugby Club last weekend as part of Ulster Bank RugbyForce – a community initiative which provides rugby clubs with support to renovate their club and upgrade their facilities.

At the Run for Ollie 10k in Milltown on Saturday (470 finishers) there was an excellent performance from Mayo AC's Mary Gleeson who finished first woman and fifth overall in 37:23. Clubmate Sarah Syron was second in 41:35

Keith O’Connell, Covey Westport CC, staged a magnificent comeback by winning the Mayo cycling league at the final race in Ballinrobe, having been in third position overall going into the final round, a 15k time trial from Ballinrobe to Kilmaine and back.

Ballyhaunis Meet and Train has been operating since August 2011 and meets every Tuesday evening at 8pm and Saturday morning at 9am at The Multi Purpose Ball Court in the Friary Field, Ballyhaunis. The objective is to meet and train in a fun and friendly environment, to suit all fitness levels.

With no local golfer in realistic contention for the Connacht Senior Open in Westport last week, it was hoped that Mayo might have some success in the nett category. In a sign of the quality of senior golf in Mayo, both positions on the podium for the nett prize were filled by two well known Mayo golfers.

In recent decades there have been a number of inter-county teams that have made real eye catching progress. Dublin, Tyrone, Armagh, Kerry and Cork are the obvious selection in this regard and they, more than most, have brought a new dimension to the whole area of team sacrifice and all year round physical preparation. In fairness, Mayo football has also moved up a gear or two and if nothing else we are a team that few will ever take for granted. But I get the impression that we are just about hanging on to the coat tails of the top three or four teams in the country right now. On the evidence of the matches I have witnessed so far this year, I need some convincing from Sundays encounter with Leitrim that we deserve to be talked about in the same breath as Dublin, Cork and, believe it or not, Donegal. I watched the Ulster champions play Derry last Saturday and those of you who saw Derry’s inept performance will agree that they (Derry) are a team in serious decline. But it was the performance of Donegal that was the main talking point of the encounter. They played a terrific brand of open flowing football that suggests they have stepped up a level from last year. It should be a fascinating Ulster semi-final between themselves and Tyrone in a week’s time. But I am digressing!
