Mayo hit the road south looking for survival
Fri, Apr 05, 2013
Not too long after the final whistle on Sunday evening, Mayo will be heading in one of three different directions. Leap-frogging Cork into the semi-final round of the league, retaining their division one status and their league season coming to an end on Sunday, or falling through the trap door and into division two of the league for the first time since the mid-nineties (the early part of the 2000s saw division one divided into two different sections).

Cold conditions put athletes to the test
Fri, Mar 29, 2013
The weekend weather provided testing and challenging conditions for most sporting activities. However, that did not deter thousands of participants in a range of athletics events. Mayo AC runners were to the fore. Breege Blehein, Noel Gibbons and Colette Tuohy, Seamus Gaughan were among the leading finishers at four events with excellent performances in tough conditions. Colette matched her 2012 fourth place finish in the west’s premier ten mile race at Craughwell. Also in action there were Brendan Hession and Gerry Galvin, both with brilliant PBs. Gerry knocked over two minutes off his 2012 Craughwell time. Seamus Gaughan won the o60 section of the Dunboyne four mile event last weekend in time of 24.51. Breege Blehein also took part in the Mayo Mud Run last Saturday at 8.5km, run, crawl and jump through natural terrain and came home in second place in the ladies’ section in a time of 50.19. A number of Mayo AC members also took part in the Harlequin Duathlon last Saturday (more on that in our report on the event), with Noel Gibbons, Dwyane Flynn, Anto Devaney and Sean Murphy all coming home in the top 25 of the men’s section. Mayo AC’s Pauline Moran won the women’s o50 section finishing in a time of 2:14.17, with Colette Sweeney and Ann Heaney both finishing in the top ten.

Mayo will make the same long journey their footballing brothers made a few weeks ago to Newry tomorrow afternoon looking to pick up a second win in the league and set them up for the Christy Ring Cup in the not to distant future. Christy Phillips’ men currently sit in fourth place in the six team division, out of contention of making the league final which will be contested by Meath and London the two sides who have beaten Mayo in this campaign so far. They sit one point behind tomorrow’s opponents from Ulster, thanks to their draw with Roscommon on the first day of the league and win over Armagh a fortnight ago in McHale Park.
Last Sunday Mayo came up against a stronger and more experienced London side who saw them off 3-13 to 1-11 in McHale Park while Down saw off neighbours Armagh, by a score of 4-13 to 0-15 in their game.

It is now compulsory for all people participating in contact sports to wear mouth guards/sports gum shields in both training and games. Some injuries to teeth from a clash of heads or a stray elbow can be quite horrific, with teeth broken, displaced, or completely knocked out. The majority of traumatic dental injuries occur to the upper front teeth in adults and children. A newly released dental document finds: “The use of properly fitting mouth guard can reduce the incidence of injuries to the teeth and surrounding tissues. A mouth guard should fit properly, adequately cover the teeth, and stay in position during impact.”

The biting cold of the tunnel under the stand in McHale Park was the venue for James Horan's latest debriefing with the press pack following Mayo's sixth game in this years national league. In a freezing cold wind that wouldn't be out of place at the start of the FBD League, things were kept short and to the point. Asked about his initial thoughts on the game the Ballintubber man said, “We showed a lot of character and hard work and honest endeavor today, so I'm delighted with that. We made hard enough work of it from a scoring point of view. We turned over a huge amount of their ball, we won a huge number of turn overs today, so that's ultimately what won it for us today. I'm delighted with the two points and we can look forward now.”
