Big bank holiday weekend of action coming up

Balla

Last weekend’s Golf Style stableford competition was won by Pat Walsh on score of 39pts thanks to his play on the back nine. Stephen Jennings finished in second place and Berine O’Connor in third. The ladies’ section was won by Breda Cleary on 37pts with Kitty O’Connor second and Aine McSuibhne third.

Ballina

The Captain’s Drive In competition sponsored by Bourke, Carrig and Loftus was won by Michael Howley on 43pts, Pat Devaney finished in second place and John Bourke finished in third. Last Sunday’s ladies’ competition was won by Frances Burke on 22pts thanks to her back six play and Kathleen Connor finished in second place. Golf lessons for lady beginners are starting on Wednesday, April 3. Five lessons cost €25. Please contact 087 9873530 if interested. All welcome

Ballinrobe

Gary Brett was the winner of last weekend’s competition on a score of 72nett with Michael C Burke finishing in second place and Paul O’Connor taking third spot. The ladies’ competition was won by Breege Costello, who scored 76nett, Carmel Sweeney finished in second place and Marian Walsh took third place.

Belmullet

Vivian Healy’s 36pts was enough to win last Sunday’s competition. He finished in front of PJ Carey in second place and John Hanley took third place. Kevin Padden won the front nine section and Sean Gaughan claimed the back nine.

Castlebar

Last weekend saw the qualifier Boyden Cup played for in Castlebar. The singles matchplay competition was sponsored by Rocky’s Bar and Lounge, Castlebar. The 16 qualifiers are Michael Connaughton, Thomas Ruane, James McHugh, Michael Howley, Colin Dawson, Conor McDonagh, John McHugh, John Gilligan, Pat Ryan, Donal O’Donoghue, Sean Mangan, Bill Evans, Martin Newcombe. The draw for the match-play stage will be posted in the clubhouse soon. This Sunday and Monday, March 31 and April 1 the club will host a 18 hole stableford for gents’ and ladies’ competitions sponsored by The Cleaning Corporation. Last weekend’s ladies’ competition was won by Breege Flynn on 38pts, Carmel Connaughton finished in second place and Aisling Towey in third place.

Claremorris

Ger Noone was the winner of last weekend’s competition on a score of 40pts. Declan Lambe finished two points behind in second place, with Declan Hession taking the category one prize. This weekend's competitions are sponsored by McHugh Costcutters Ballindine, and run from Friday March 29 to Monday April 1.

Mulranny

Fergus Rothwell took care of his membership for 2014 by winning the free sub prize at the first golfer of the year competition last Sunday. Fergus shot a 76 on a very tough day for golf. Richard Keane came home in second on 78, with Mick O’Donnell finishing in third place. On Easter Monday there will be an open mixed scotch foursomes competition, with entry fee costing €20 per year.

Westport

Nuala Hopkins recorded the first hole in one of the competition season on the third hole in the pink ball scramble last weekend.

The gents’ competition was won by John Moore, Jerry Mannion, Seamus Gill and Jerry Moran. The ladies’ was won by Nuala Moody, Mary McNicholas, Maeve O’Farrell and Bernie Bergin.

The first prize presentation of the year will take place on Sunday next at 7pm. The winners of the Open competitions that are scheduled to take place over the Easter weekend will also be presented on the night. The fee for visitors will be €20 which includes green fee and competition entry. Open competitions will take place on Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday. The final of the Winter League will take place on bank holiday Monday also.
