Call for realignment for north Mayo bridges

Erris-based Fianna Fáil councillor Sean Carey raised the issue of two bridges that come one after each other in Glencastle needing realignment works - at a recent meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District. Cllr Carey said that he had received a number of representations from constituents on the bridges and that a realignment was needed to bypass them to improve safety on the road. He was informed by council staff that an issue had been raised by the head of roads with the department to try and get the project moving.

Kilcoyne puts forward questions for HSE Forum

Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne has put forward four questions for the upcoming HSE Regional Forum which will take place on February 22. The four questions that Cllr Kilcoyne has out forward to be answered are: (1) Is the cost of taking a blood sample by a GP covered in all circumstances for medical card holders? If not, in what circumstances is it not covered? If a GP charges a medical card holder for taking blood in circumstances where the cost of same is covered by the medical card, what action does the HSE propose to take on the matter? (2) How many people in Mayo are on the waiting list for hip or knee replacements and the number waiting for less than 1 year, more than 1 year and more than 2 years? (3) How many dentists in County Mayo and in County Galway provide services to people under the medical card scheme? and (4) Does the Orpea Group own or operate any nursing homes in the Community Services, HSE West area of responsibility? Do they operate or provide any home care in the Community Services, HSE West area?

Revaluations of Rateable Properties - Calleary

Dara Calleary TD has welcomed confirmation from the Valuations Office that the revaluation of rateable properties in Mayo is deferred until 2023. Deputy Calleary said: "I have been in contact with numerous small and medium business owners across Mayo in recent months about the revaluation of rateable properties – an issue that has caused additional worry and stress for business owners on top of the covid stress of the past two years. The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien, on foot of representations, has now agreed with the Commissioner of Valuation that the Commissioner will defer the revaluation of rateable properties in Mayo until 2023. New valuations arising from the revaluation will now be finalised in October 2023 and become effective for rates purposes from 2024 onwards. The Valuation Office will write to all ratepayers in Mayo in the near future to notify them of the changed timelines. I am happy that common sense has prevailed and some breathing space has been afforded to ratepayers in the county."

Chambers calls on Dáil to pass Stalking bill without delay

As the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person (Amendment) (Stalking) Bill 2021 has passed through the Seanad, Fianna Fáil Senator Lisa Chambers is calling on members of the Dáil to pass the bill without delay. Senator Chambers brought forward the legislation in July 2021 that sought to introduce an offence of Stalking into Irish law.

CCTV concerns raised at municipal districts

The need for CCTV in towns in the county was raised at two different municipal district monthly meetings this week. The issue of some CCTV cameras not operating in Westport was raised at the West Mayo Municipal District, while at the Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District, a call was made for the installation of CCTV in Claremorris town to curb anti-social behaviour.
