Mayo moves to new division in HSE Regions Plan

Fri, Aug 04, 2023

Cabinet approval was announced this week for the Health Service Executive to implement a new Health Regions plan - of six separate divisions - that will see Mayo now form part of a new division - HSE West and North West. As to whether this will mean Mayo's voice at the table will be heard stronger than ever, in terms of the delivery of health and social care services, remains to be seen.

The new HSE West and North West division will include counties Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo and Galway - whereas the functional area of the existing model - Regional Health Forum, West - covers the city councils of Limerick and Galway and the county councils of Clare, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Limerick, Mayo, North Tipperary, Roscommon and Sligo. On paper, the new structure should result in less councillors attending the monthly public health meetings to campaign on local health matters.

The lighthouse that was not – Old Head 1797

Thu, Jul 27, 2023

The lighthouse known as the Tower of Lloyd was commissioned in 1791 by Thomas Taylor, 1st Earl of Bective, in memory of his father. Henry Aaron Baker designed it. The 'lighthouse' is located on the Commons of Lloyd near Kells in County Meath, some 40km from the coast, and as such is redundant as a lighthouse. It was, however, used in the nineteenth century by the aristocracy for viewing the local hunt. The Tower of Lloyd is, in fact, an eighteenth-century folly.

Thu, Jul 27, 2023

There are three general degrees available at University – Business - which I covered in my last article, as well as Science and Arts, which I will cover in this article. General degrees are a great starting point for any student who does not know what they want to do after the leaving cert but really enjoyed studying a group of subjects or one subject at leaving cert. For example, many students who really enjoyed Biology and Chemistry go on to do general science. Other students who enjoyed arts subjects such as English, history or languages may opt to go on and study an Arts degree.
