Almost €20,000 in funding distributed to forty two sports and community groups by Mayo Sports Partnership

At a recent Mayo Sports Partnership Board meeting close to €20,000 was allocated to 42 clubs/organisations in Mayo through the Partnerships 2017 special participation grant scheme. Special guest at a recent presentation evening, Minister Michael Ring commended all involved in grassroots sport throughout the county, saying: “Supporting clubs and organisations through this annual small grant scheme by Mayo Sports Partnership recognises the vital role that sport is playing in our communities. Without volunteers sport just would not happen and it is vital that we continue to support them in their hugely important work."

Calls for pyrite remediation schemes for Mayo following publication of report

Two Mayo senators have called on the Government to bring in a remediation scheme for homes in north Mayo that have been affected by pyrite. Both Sinn Féin senator Rose Conway-Walsh and Fine Gael senator Michelle Mulherin called for such a scheme to be put in place this week after the Expert Panel on Concrete Blocks published their report.

Senator Conway-Walsh said, "At long last we now have a conclusive report confirming pyrite in blocks used to build private and public houses in Mayo and Donegal. We now know at least 345 private homeowners and a number of council estates in Mayo are being destroyed with pyrite. A redress scheme must be put in place immediately. Let this be the first job for the new senior minister.

Family fun coming up at Westport Food Festival

There will be plenty on the menu for families and children at Westport Food Festival, which takes place from June 23 to June 25. There are workshops and tours, a new fast food race, and of course the Fairgreen Food Village which is fun for everyone. There is also a full programme of (free) demonstrations from top chefs like Stephan Matz, Michael Heneghan, and Bare Necessities on Saturday, so everyone gets a chance to learn. Demonstrations start at 12 noon with Stephan Matz.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny was in the United States this week as part of his final trade mission as the leader of the Government. Mr Kenny, who has led the country since 2011, is expected to step down next week when Leo Varadkar's elevation to the position will be voted on in the Dáil. As part of his trip to the US Kenny met with the executive management of Baxter Healthcare in its headquarters in Deerfield, Illinois.

Ring allocates €309,296 for social enterprise projects in Mayo

Minister for State for Regional Economic Development, Michael Ring, this week announced the allocation of €309,296 for seven social enterprises in Mayo.  The funding is part of a €1.648 million allocation made by Minister Ring from the Dormant Accounts Fund to 42 social enterprise projects across the country.

The rescheduled Breaffy GAA Monster Auction will take place this coming Saturday in Breaffy GAA Clubhouse. The auction was due to take place on Saturday, May 27 but was postponed as a mark of respect after a tragic death in the club. The auction gets underway this Saturday at 6.30pm and the hundreds of items up for auction has a worth in excess of €30,000.

New tourism video features Aidan O’Shea, Lee Keegan, and Colm Boyle

Mayo Gaelic footballers Aidan O’Shea, Lee Keegan, and Colm Boyle feature in a new tourism video released online this week. The video follows the players as they embark on a road trip along the Wild Atlantic Way in Mayo. It is the second production in the Wild Mayo series of five tourism films, commissioned by Mayo.ie. In the film, the three men revisit Belmullet, the location of a memorable training camp as part of the Mayo senior football team. They discuss their past experiences and visit some old familiar faces along the way.

Visiting US College collaborates with GMIT Mayo on environmental project

A group of students and staff from James Madison University, Virginia, USA, are due to arrive in Mayo today, Friday June 9 to take part in a summer study programme in collaboration with Lifelong Learning at GMIT Mayo, UCC and Waterways Ireland. The US group of three faculty members and 14 students majoring in biology, theatre and communications, are researching the cultural and environmental impact of water on our lives. As part of their studies and research they will take part in field trips and excursions right across Mayo in collaboration with staff on GMIT Outdoor Education degree programmes and the Lifelong Learning Department.

There was great excitement and fun at Western Care’s St. Rita’s residential home, Claremorris, recently, when the six members of the Tuam-based super group, The Saw Doctors, visited to launch the 10th annual Kathleen Conneely Charity Walk on Clare Island for Western Care Association local services. The group’s evocative song, Clare Island, penned by Leo Moran and Dave Carlton, is an enduring anthem that evokes the idyllic beauty and scenery of Clew Bay and Clare Island and the peace experienced by all visitors to the area.
