Superintendent appeals for information in wake of Swinford homicide

Supt Tony Healy urged members of the public who may have even a small bit of information to come forward to Gardai who are investigating the suspected murder of Joe Deacy in Swinford last weekend. Supt Healy told the Mayo Advertiser yesterday afternoon: "Any little bit of information that people have can make a huge difference in an investigation." Speaking about the response from the public to date he said: "It's been really good, we are working through those and looking at CCTV footage and other things to progress the investigation."

Almost 7,000 people gathered in Ballina last weekend to take part in the National Hunger Strike Commemoration which took place in Mayo for the first time. Thousands travelled from all over the country to mark the 36th anniversary of the H-Block hunger strikes as well as honour the Mayo men who died on hunger strike including Ballycroy native Jack McNeela, Hollymount’s Frank Stagg, and Ballina man Michael Gaughan.

The village of Knock is preparing for an influx of up to 120,000 to 150,000 people next week during the National Novena to Our Lady of Knock - which will run from Monday, August 14, to Wednesday, August 23. The annual novena at the Marian Shrine is one of the biggest events to draw people into the county each year and this year is no different. This year is the 40th year of the National Novena to Our Lady of Knock, the original intention behind the Novena was to recognise the unique role that Knock has to play in the life of the Irish church. The theme of this year's pilgrimage is 'Living Life to the Full' and there will be a number of guest speakers, and daily workshops along with services taking place over the nine days of the novena. Ceremonies will take place at 3pm and 8.30pm and workshops at 12 noon and 6pm each day.

The 362 homes in Mayo that have been identified as having issues with pyrite in the blocks should be put at the top of any redress list if funding becomes available, the July meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District was told this week. Sinn Féin councillor Teresa Whelan put forward that idea at Monday's meeting which was held in Geesala.
