Sixty five farmed salmon have been caught in five rivers in Mayo and Galway

Inland Fisheries Ireland can confirmed this week that 65 farmed salmon were caught in rivers in Mayo and Galway, the affected rivers are the Delphi, Erriff, Kylemore/Dawros, Newport and Bunowen. Inland Fisheries Ireland has been monitoring the situation since August.

Irish Water commences work on troublesome Ballina water main

Irish Water, working in partnership with Mayo County Council, this week commenced work to replace 450 metres of troublesome water main in the Bohernasup area of Ballina. This section of water main is prone to frequent bursts and has caused a lot of disruption to residents and businesses in the area over the past number of years.

Westport in shock and mourning following untimely death of Mayo News managing editor Neill O'Neill

A pall was cast over the town of Westport and around the county this week with the news that the managing editor of The Mayo News Neill O'Neill passed away suddenly at the age of 36. Mr O'Neill took ill at his home at Rosbeg, The Quay, Westport early on Tuesday morning.

€1.34 million to help revitalise 14 towns and villages in Mayo

Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring this week allocated €1.34 million to help revitalise 14 towns and villages in Mayo. The funding was approved under the 2017 Town and Village Renewal Scheme. More than 280 rural towns and villages across the country are set to benefit from over €21 million in funding under the 2017 Town and Village Renewal Scheme. The scheme is a key part of the Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development.

Ballina councillors reject changing of zoning for recycling centre

A proposal to change the zoning to allow a recycling centre be constructed at the Bunree Industrial Estate was unanimously rejected earlier this week by members of the Ballina Municipal District at their monthly meeting. Connacht Enviro Containers had applied for permission to construct a commercial unit for sorting recyclable materials at the Bunree Industrial Estate.

Families of children with muscular dystrophy bring their fight for Translarna approval to Leinster House

Sinn Féin Mayo senator Rose Conway-Walsh has stressed the importance of an all-Ireland approach to securing patients’ access to a life changing drug treatment. Speaking after a briefing in Leinster House at which families of Duchenne muscular dystrophy sufferers spoke of their ongoing efforts to secure access to the drug Translarna, Sen Conway-Walsh said: "As legislators, across all political persuasions we have a responsibility to join the fight of these families for access to treatment which will, as it has done in the North and 22 other countries, significantly delay the loss of walking and associated respiratory difficulties."
