Irish Water commences work on troublesome Ballina water main

Irish Water, working in partnership with Mayo County Council, this week commenced work to replace 450 metres of troublesome water main in the Bohernasup area of Ballina. This section of water main is prone to frequent bursts and has caused a lot of disruption to residents and businesses in the area over the past number of years.

Mayo County Council is carrying out the works on behalf of Irish Water and will have traffic management plans in place to ensure the least amount of disruption necessary takes place. The work sections will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. The works may involve some short-term water shut-offs and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours prior notice of any planned shut-offs. A water tanker will be available to provide an alternative source of water in the event of any shut-offs and customers are reminded that water from this tanker must be boiled prior to consumption.

Irish Water’s regional asset operations lead Anthony Skeffington said: “This is a relatively short term programme of works which will alleviate long term problems which have caused widespread disruption to the people of this area of Ballina.

“Additional sections of water main have been earmarked for replacement along the Killala Road and in the Bohernasup area as well as along Creggs Road. These have been identified as the highest priority areas for replacement within the town based on the leakage levels and numbers of bursts that occurred along them in recent times. They will be carried out under Irish Water’s Leakage Reduction Programme and once details are finalised Irish Water will communicate with all relevant stakeholders.”
