Popular broadcaster Anne Doyle has been announced as the guest speaker for the 18th Annual Valentine’s Candlelight Ball which is taking place in Breaffy House Resort on Saturday, February 10 in aid of the Western Care Association. The retired RTÉ Newsreader is a proud Wexford woman who started her career in television at the national broadcaster in 1978.

Up to 10,000 homes and business were without power for some stage around the county due to Storm Eleanor this week, with almost all of them having it restored by Wednesday evening. A spokesperson for the ESB told the Mayo Advertiser that: "We had local crews out working from Tuesday evening to restore power and they were joined by crews from around the country from places like Dublin and Donegal to assist, and they have been working around the clock to restore power to everybody."

Mayo County Council arts service have announced the launch of their new UPSTART website at www.mayo-upstart.ie. UPSTART is an initiative of Mayo County council arts service celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities annually in December. In an effort to document and promote the work of the UPSTART programme, Mayo County Council Arts Service has developed the UPSTART website which was designed by Brett Henning.

Councillors in the Ballina Municipal District have agreed to allocate money left over from their 2017 general municipal allocation to the town’s O’Rahilly Street project.
Despite a number of councillors offering alternate suggestions, the council agreed to director of services Tom Gilligan’s recommendation that any outstanding money in the GMA at the end of 2017 be allocated to fund the completion of the O’Rahilly Street project.

Network Ireland, Mayo Branch has announced the election of Anne Conlon as its new president for 2018. The election took place at the recent AGM. Ms Conlon, who is managing director of Castlebar-based Conlon Training since its establishment in 2010, was delighted to accept the nomination. As part of this role Ms Conlon is on the national executive, a role she took up in 2017 as vice president of Network Mayo. She was also appointed to the national sponsorship group in 2017, which is responsible for the funding of all 15 Networks in Ireland.

Mayo County Council Arts Service has announced the recipients of awards and bursaries for 2017 for amateur drama, music recording assistance, and Tyrone Guthrie regional bursaries.
Visual artist Saoirse Wall and composer Donal Sarsfield, are the recipients of the Tyrone Guthrie Regional Bursary 2017. Every year Mayo County Council offers two bursary awards to artists born or living in Mayo, to take a residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrig in Monaghan. The Tyrone Guthrie Centre is a residential workplace for artists, dedicated to supporting and facilitating creativity and is the largest residency of its type for artists in the country. Each bursary covers the costs for a two-week period, plus the use of a studio if relevant. There is a variety of artist work spaces available, including studios, a music room for composers and musicians, a multi-media room, and a large rehearsal and performance space. The centre is universally well-regarded for successfully providing a creative space outside everyday life, which gives artists time and space to focus on ideas and work.

In the July-September period this year, the average rent in county Mayo for newly registered properties with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) was €575. This is up €11 when compared to the average rent in Q2, 2017, which was €564, and is up €23 when compared to a year earlier, in Q3, 2016. This is according to the latest Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) Rent Index which is produced in conjunction with the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI).

Castlebar Rotary Club’s flagship fundraising project, The Tree of Remembrance is running again until tomorrow Saturday, December 23, for the 10th year in succession. The outstanding success of this event in previous years has made it a permanent feature in the Rotary Club’s calendar. Since the Rotary Tree of Remembrance started in 2008 it has raised more than €20,000 for local charities. The purpose of the tree is to give members of the public an opportunity to remember a loved one at Christmas while supporting local charities.
