Cluid lambasted for lack of progress in Ballina estate

The lack of progress of any real note in the rejuvenation of St Patrick’s Estate in Ballina since the housing group took over control of the estate two years ago provoked widespread condemnation at the monthly meeting of Ballina Town Council on Wednesday night. The housing association gave the council a presentation on the work that was to be carried out in the rejuvenation of the estate over the coming months but before the presentation even began, the anger of the council members was demonstrated.

Mayo decentralisation plans unaffected by budget

Decentralisation plans for Mayo were largely unaffected by Minister Brian Lenihan’s budget, the details of which were announced this week, except for 38 jobs which will be reviewed in three years’ time. Confirmation was given by the Finance Minister that decentralisation will go ahead in Claremorris and Charlestown.

Befriending service launched in Mayo

Last Friday saw the launch of a new initiative to reach out to the older members of the community in Mayo with the launch of the first befriending service. From next Monday October 20 the service will come on stream with 14 trained volunteers based in the Social Services Centre, Castlebar offering a regular phone call service to those in the greater Castlebar area who would like one.
