A 21-year-old Romanian woman who stole ten bottles of whiskey from a Castlebar store was sentenced to prison at Castlebar District Court this week by Judge Aeneas McCarthy.

Online services for Mayo County Council to be enhanced

A self service online system will be expanded on the Mayo County Council website, with one of the new enhancements being an online planning system. This new service will include a validation system, which will reduce the need for further information requests, and will therefore speed up in the time it takes to submit planning applications. The development of this novel system was welcomed by committee members of the Cultural, Education, Heritage and Corporate Affairs SPC meeting in the library last Wednesday.

No major road works in Mayo until 2015

Mayo County Council senior engineer Joe Beirne gave a warning to the elected members of Mayo County Council that he couldn’t see any major roads projects starting in Mayo in the next six years. Beirne was informing the council of the roads programmes for 2009 at the council’s annual budget meeting.

Geraldine Butler, Chairperson of the Chernobyl Children’s Project in Westport, welcomed an historic inter-governmental agreement between Ireland and Belarus, announced last week, which will allow children to travel to the Westport area again—with two children arriving here for the Christmas holidays.

Mayo’s Ballyglass RNLI crew to star in Bank of Ireland calendar

In a picture reminiscent of a scene from the 1998 movie Armageddon, members of the Ballyglass RNLI crew pose for the opening shot of Bank of Ireland’s 2009 calendar. Second coxswain Pat Walker and eight of the Ballyglass RNLI crew, more used to the challenge of the high seas, feature in the bank’s quarter of a million calendars that this year profile the volunteering and fundraising efforts of its 16,000 employees both at home and abroad.

Mayo shortlist announced for the Zurich LAMA Awards 2009

Zurich and the Local Authorities Members’ Association (LAMA) have announced the shortlist for their upcoming awards—which celebrate excellence in construction, engineering and infrastructure projects as nominated by local authorities, for their outstanding contributions and benefit to the community—with Mayo projects nominated in nine categories.

These finalists are: Best Civil Engineering Project: Achill Sound Bridge; Best Civil Defence Building: CAMP West; Best Commercial Building: the McWilliam Park Hotel; Best Public Building: Ballina County Library; Best Developer/Promoter: Broadhaven Bay Hotel; Best Marina Development: Clare Island Pier; Best Sporting Facility: Milebush Park; Best Environmentally Friendly Initiative: Mayo Walking Strategy.
