Ballina cuts rate by one per cent, while other towns remain the same

With the new year creeping around the corner it was budget time for the local authorities in Mayo over the past week. Mayo County Council will meet this afternoon (Friday) at 2pm to finalise its budget for the next year, while the three town councils in the county have wrapped up their budget proceedings, with Ballina leading the way by cutting their rateable valuation by one per cent for 2009, and Castlebar and Westport were able to hold off any rate increase for the new year.

New Year road works for Newport Road

Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny TD has been informed by Mayo County Council that the restoration works on Newport Road between the Newtown traffic lights and the Dun Beg estate junction have been approved and will be carried out in the near future. Owing to the Christmas season, it is likely that the works will be carried out in the New Year.

Victory for Watersville residents on relief road plan

The residents of Watersville, Pontoon Road, Castlebar secured a victory in their fight to stop a relief road passing through their estate this week at the monthly meeting of Castlebar Town Council. A large group of the residents attended the meeting in Marsh House where the elected members rejected a new inner relief road from the Pontoon Road to Rathbawn that would have passed through their estate. A motion from independent Councillor Michael Kilcoyne which was seconded by Fíanna Fáil Cllr Blackie Gavin was passed which will see the proposed improvement works on New Line and Davitt’s Terrace go ahead, but the works will terminate after Davitt’s Terrace and no relief road will be built through the Watersville area. The road is now off the table for at least six months and after which time the town manager can put the proposal before the elected members again.

The drop-in centre offers a professional listening service, information and professional counselling, aromatherapy, massage, reflexology and stress management. All services are free of charge and are available to family members or friends.
