Following her non-appealed 28 day stint in prison, Maura Harrington appeared before Belmullet District Court on Wednesday for the continuation of a part heard case where it was alleged that Harrington, Tullyaghanbawn, Geesala, Belmullet, who appeared to three witnesses to be in an “aggressive” and “drunk” state, climbed over the gate at a private Roadbridge site in Glengad on June 19 2008 at 12.50am; went into a security cabin where she removed a log book and threw it away; tried to remove a camera from one of the IRMS security men who was filming the incident; kicked one of the security men in the groin; and tried to smash the window of a car parked in the yard with a block but failed in her attempts.

With the impending opening of the new swimming pool in Claremorris, Fianna Fáil councillor Pat McHugh questioned the feasibility of moving the bus stops in the town from their current locations beside the swimming pool and the church to beside the train station, at this week’s local electoral area committee.

The elected members of Mayo County Council from Ballina approved the raising of a loan of €12.9 million for the provision of a 66-unit housing development in St Patrick’s Estate in Ballina by Clúid Housing Association. Senior executive officer Paul Benson outlined to the members the reason for the raising of this loan. He told the members that the council would raise the loan and hand the money over to Clúid for the scheme, but the council would be reimbursed fully by central government the amount of the loan and any charges that were applied on it. He also informed the members that the tendering process was well under way for the project and that he was still confident that work would be under way on the scheme before the summer.

The Ballina electoral area committee stood firm on their stance in regard to a zoning issue in the town and environs development plan at their meeting this week. Stephen Dowds, a planning consultant for Mayo County Council, went through a number of submissions that the council had received on foot of the draft development plan that was published late last year. One submission and suggestion in the manager’s report sparked the ire of the councillors. Before the plan went out on public display the elected members of the council had decided to rezone a portion of land from agricultural to industrial commercial, at the request of a business owner who had a premises he wanted to extend. However the report put before them at this week’s meeting was calling on changing the lands back to agricultural.

A Latvian man who was disqualified from driving for two years in 2008, and was detected driving in Belmullet in February — a week after he purchased a car — with no insurance or driving licence, was disqualified from driving for six years and given a suspended sentence at Belmullet District Court this week.
