Litter has become a major problem in the Ballyheane area so in conjunction with An Taisce the members of Ballyheane Community Council are organising a clean up of both Ballyheane village and its surrounding areas.

Mayo Citizens Information Service will hold an outreach on Wednesday April 22 at the Cosgallen Office, the Enterprise Centre, Airport Road, Charlestown from 9.45am to 11.30am. The service is free and confidential and a wide range of areas are covered including consumer rights, employment rights, social welfare, taxation and disability information. Cosgallen CDP in conjunction with North East LEADER Partnership Co Teo will hold a Jobs Club in May. The course will be held from Tuesday May 5 until Friday May 22. The course will be held every morning from 10am to 1pm in the Cosgallen Office in Charlestown and a small out of pocket expenses will be paid. A walk organised by the Barnacogue/Killaturley walking group will take place on Tuesday April 21 at 7.30pm. The walkers will meet at the Killaturley Shrine which is the second shrine on the Cullane Road coming from Swinford. This walking group has held a number of walks during the last few years and they have been very successful. A perpetual cup in honour of Fr Declan Caulfield will be presented to the Young Athlete of the Day who wins the most medals. All competitors must be under the specified age on July 31.

Some political commentators have adjudged last week’s budget was a success because it avoided on-street protests. The October budget got pensioners and students out with placards. The February public sector income levy resulted in a large Dublin march. Politicians say the public response to the latest budget has been silence. This should be even more scary to Government backbenchers.

Fianna Fáil Minister Eamon Ó Cuív will be in Castlebar tonight (Friday evening April 17) to officially launch the election campaign of Mayo County Council and Castlebar Town Council election candidate Blackie Gavin. Cllr Gavin is contesting the Mayo County Council elections for the first time this year, having served on Castlebar Town Council since 1994.

For the first time in history the honorary freedom of Castlebar was bestowed on one of its greatest sons last night. Johnny Mee, who has served the town as a town and county councillor for over three decades, as well as through numerous voluntary organisations such as Western Care, was awarded the honour after he announced his retirement from politics earlier this year.

Labour’s Harry Barrett has hit out at the failure of Government to provide a €2 million grant aid package promised to the county for wave energy.
The Mayo Energy Audit 2009-2030 investigates how the county of Mayo might adapt to the challenge posed by fossil fuel depletion and global warming. It is intended to form the basis for a comprehensive strategic energy action plan for Mayo. The audit has examined all of Mayo’s renewable energy resources as well as considering the future role of fossil fuels. Conducted by the Sustainability Institute the audit states that wave energy will not develop significantly in Ireland “for at least a decade” due to investment difficulties and the “unproven nature” of the technology. The crux of the problem is demand. The energy audit clearly demonstrates the limitations of renewable sources of energy, even in a county like Mayo with good resources and a relatively low population.
