The first grant award presentation of CastleCash YouthBank took place recently in the Youth Information Centre, Pavilion Road, Castlebar. Grants were distributed by the youth committee of YouthBank to local youth groups in Castlebar to run community initiatives. The event was attended by the newly elected Mayor, Councillor Michael Kilcoyne.

Figures obtained by Mayo Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony have revealed that €29m was spent in the past two years on transporting prisoners between prisons and court houses. Deputy O’Mahony is calling for an immediate review of the system which he says often has prison officers sitting around in the courts until the defendant’s case is called and then, in many cases, the case is put back to another hearing date.

An Bord Pleanála criticised
While discussing a proposed pedestrian underpass for the N26 in Ballina, Fine Gael Councillor Michelle Mulherin blasted An Bord Pleanála and queried the body’s independent status saying their delay in approving the N26 “suits the government”, before she added that it “beggars belief” that the lack of a decision from An Bord Pleanála, which should have been made 18 weeks from its submission in 2007; was “shabby”, “crazy”, and is “absolutely disgraceful”.

In recent years the committee of Campaí Samhraidh Iorrais has organised summer camps throughout the Erris area with the assistance of funding received from The Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. The aim of the camps, which are targeted at children in the six to 12 year age group, is to encourage them to speak Irish in an enjoyable environment.
