The foresight of the members and executive of Ballina Town Council in planning ahead for major social and economic projects for the town was lauded by the elected members at their monthly meeting this week. The elected members were told by Town Manager Paddy Mahon that the Town Council had received correspondence from the Border Midlands and Western regional authority (BMW) to inform them that €1.4 million had been made available to the town for environmental, economic and social projects in the town as long as the local authority came up with 40 per cent of the matching funding for the project.

Judge Mary Devins commented that bringing a Section Four Public Order Act charge (being intoxicated in a public place) was meaningless as she was only able to impose a €120 fine, as she convicted a man whom she said needed help with his alcohol addictions.

A Mayo county councillor has stepped down from the HSE regional west forum in protest against the removal of breast cancer surgical and diagnostic services from Mayo General Hospital. Fine Gael Councillor Patsy O’Brien, the man who topped the poll in the Claremorris electoral area and received the highest number of votes of all candidates in Mayo in the June local elections, has not sought to be re-appointed to the health forum, having served on it since its inception. Cllr O’Brien told the Mayo Advertiser that the forum was “too political” and he expressed his disappointment in Mayo’s two Fianna Fáil TDs for not ensuring the services remained.

Ballina Town Council elected Fianna Fáil Cllr Johnnie O’Malley as the chairperson of the Joint Policing Committee in the town at their monthly meeting on Wednesday night for a period of two years after he defeated Fine Gael Cllr Mark Winters by a vote of five to four in the council chamber, with Cllr Winters elected in the vice chair position.

Four convictions were recorded in Claremorris District Court this week for illegal dumping at a site in Claremorris which cost Mayo County Council over €10,000 to clean up. One person pleaded guilty to the charges in court, while one other person was convicted in her absence and two others who pleaded not guilty were also convicted by Judge Mary Devins.
